| Popular music of Bengal of the pattern that is in vogue today is of comparatively recent origin and was practically unkown, say three decades ago. It represents the cumulative effect of many trends and influences and thus caters to a catholicity of tastes inherent amongst the people of Bengal. The selections featured in this album are not only the most popular numbers of 1962 but are at the same time a representative group, some of which indicate the impact of folk music, while others are Raga-based and still others, showing un mistakable sign of having been influenced by Western music. This synthesis has not, however, destroyed the individuality and the distinctive flavour inherent in modern Bengali music. The selections represent the original works of such leading composers as Salil Chodhury, Nachiketa Ghosh and Satinath Mukherjee and the top-ranking artistes who have contributed their their voice are Hemanta Mukherjee, Shyamal Mitra, Manabendra Mukherjee, Satinath Mukherjee, Protima Banerjee and Ila Bose. | |
